Diabetic Eye Examination

It is a chronic disease that prevents your body from making or using insulin, which in turn leads to increased sugar levels in your blood.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when there is a weakening or swelling of tiny blood vessels that feed the retina, resulting in blood leaking or growing of new blood vessels.

Tiny bulges protrude from the vessel walls, leaking fluid and blood into the retina.  This fluid can cause swelling or edema in the central part of the retina (macula).

The diabetic eye examination starts like an comprehensive eye examination.  It focuses on the health of your retina and the integrity of the blood vessels.   Your Optometrist will dilate your pupils.   We will then perform an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) that will detect any thinning or thickening of blood vessels that indicated leaking fluid.

Annual eye examinations are covered by the Government of Saskatchewan with a valid Saskatchewan Health card for those diagnosed with Diabetes.
